BIRDS & HIPPOS

The Living Pulse of Lake Naivasha

The Living Pulse of Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha is internationally recognised as one of Kenya’s richest birding areas, with over 400 recorded species. Even casual observers are quickly drawn into the spectacle — birds are not hidden here; they are everywhere.

The iconic African Fish Eagle is frequently seen and heard, its distinctive call echoing across the water. Pelicans, cormorants, kingfishers, herons, ibises, jacanas, cranes, and storks are commonly spotted along the shoreline and from boats.

Lake Naivasha is also home to a large resident population of hippos. During the day they rest in the water, often visible on boat excursions. At night, their low calls carry across the lake — a reminder that this is a living, breathing ecosystem. We cannot of course forget to mention the yellow fever acacia trees that frame much of the shoreline, providing perches for birds and defining the lake’s unmistakable visual identity.
